Claim: The Indian National Congress (INC) claimed in a tweet that “India is currently facing the highest unemployment in 45 years”.

Our examination found the claim to be FALSE.

How We Examined the Claim:

We examined historical unemployment data for India. The World Bank has published this data from 1991. Although it does not cover 45 years, the data as depicted in the graph below clearly shows that from 1991 to 2018, India’s unemployment rate consistently remained above 7%. The only major spike after 2018 occurred in 2020 during the COVID pandemic, when it peaked at 7.86%. Since then, the rate has declined sharply. For the year 2024, India’s unemployment stood at 4.2%. Monthly unemployment numbers show seasonal fluctuations. The May 2025 number of 5.6% as quoted by the official Congress handle is still way below the annual average for most of the period covered by the World Bank.

Conclusion:

The Congress official handle’s claim that unemployment in India is at a 45-year high is not supported by historical data. On the contrary, World Bank data shows that India is enjoying a period of lowest unemployment at least since 1991.

Therefore, the claim is False.
